Saramagal house

A house located in Odivelas, with Arrábida and Lisbon as a landscape to lose sight of. Volumetrically to the North, this is a shy and reserved house, preserving the intimacy that is lived in the interior. To the South this house opens to its exterior areas in dialogue with them. The white volume that connects the floors and balconies, acts almost as a skin that confers unity and coherence to the volume of the house.

In the back, anthracite color planes are used to emphasize the shadow play and to give greater prominence to the white elements. A set of anthracite vertical blades, give this house a very own identity and are used punctually and at different moments. The support walls and the semi-buried lower floor – that corresponds to the garage floor – are covered with black ceramic bricks, this material visually annuls this floor and release the two noble floors of the house, passing the idea that it is lower.

Sunlight creates contrast between the shadows of volums,empty spaces and a mirror reflection in the fence. Terrace has an amazing view far away to the city.
Main entrance to the house on north side. On the ground floor are all the living spaces. From the terrace on the south you can go down to the garden and pool.
Frontal photo to west facade with the street going down. Facade on this side is clean, white and closed with one nishe balcony and a black entrance to garage.

White volume over the grey ground floor. Materiality of a facade is simple. Mostly white with dark grey parts and black windows with the glass fences.
House is a clean white color but with the contrast of a black windows and grey parts pushed more to the back. Shadows are making the volums even more defined.
Only with open door wall in bricks can be visible. Down part of a house is dark and up light. The outside wall has both, a massive and a more transparant part.
White horizontal volume with long openings in dark grey makes house look more degraded on the south side. This side of house has the most of a glass surfaces.
Photo focused to the edge is creating even more contrasting and dramatic atmosfere with the dark cloudy sky. Pool is hidden behind small bushes and a wall.
From down terrace we see wide white slabs and dark walls pushed behind them. Fences of house in glass or metal are very transparent, almost invisible.
The house from this angle seems even more massive because of clean, minimalistic volumes hanging over dark brick wall and openings that are pushed to inside.
Photo taken from other side down by the a pool to the edge of a south corner. South facade is full of windows but dark and hidden and west facade all full.
Sunlight coming throught the metal fence creating interesting shadows. Dark bricks continue from floor to the wall and on stairs going up to the ground floor.

One side of a photo stairs are going up and on the other side there is a calm, very open outside area with the pool and a view to landscape all around.
This patio is surrounded by dark brick of basement and dark wall of ground floor, even the stones on the floor are black. Light is coming down until the floor.
From north side house seems lower since the basement is not seen. Wall is sorrounding two white volums. Composition of facade is clean and minimalistic.

Clean minimalistic white walls and their lines in three layers going to the back. Entrance door are in black void of the facade not visible from street.
All this entrance nishe is in black so if you don't know you hardly notice the door. Light and shadow in photo are making stronger contrast between volumes.
Through open door we can directly see living space with wide windows and amazing view. Outside house seems massive but at the entrance completly transparent.
Still very light and open but use of dark wood on the floor makes the inside more warm in contrast to outside. There are stairs going up with wood verticals.
Like outside also inside house are used the vertical elements, but here wooden. Verticals are standing on a black step, the second one continuing to entrance.
Verticals are finishing as a fence on the platform of stairs. Space is open and bright. Light is coming from windows all around and even up - skylight.
There is an welcome arch used to put the keys. But since we enter the house our view is directed outside. All ground floor is an open space of living area.
One duble hight space is at the entrance and another in dining area. Space is dinamic but calm with wood, white walls and furniture in shades of grey.
Photo from dining side is fucused to a relaxing zone of this wide living space with sofa and TV and lower ceiling. Nice views are all around the living area.
Part on right side of ground floor with lower ceiling gives more private and relaxing atmosfer in same space. There is a fireplace and a sofa making space cozy.

In the middle space of this view is dynamic duble hight with the light falling. Here we can notice the volumetry of outside that is not so obvious inside.

Coming from huge living space to the smaller kitchen with lower ceiling. Also here is a possible acces to terrace where they have an outside barbecue area.
Acess between two spaces is the wooden sliding door. We can also see from living space to kitchen or opposite way over a little round window in kitchen.
Calm tones of white and grey in combination with warm wood up of a counter top and an elegant open shelf. On right side is a special shelf for collecting wine.
Counter top could be used to cook or as a breakfast corner from other side. Kitchen has many cabinets and space to storage. The style is simple and clear.
The little window in kitchen looking to entrance area on the other side. At the end we can see barbecue and terrace outside with amazing view around the site.
Furniture is white, only the countertop is wooden box in the middle that can be used for ironing the chlothes. Loundry room has a terrace outside on north.

Close look to wooden floor, stairs, sliding doors and frames. We can see the exception - black step. Edge of the ceiling is beggining of two-hight space.
Going up on wooden stairs to first floor. One side is a simple, just one wooden diagonal but on the other side there are many wooden verticals in order.
Looking down we can see again element of verticals and one diagonal on other side. There is a square void in the corner of ceiling for the skylight to enter.
Upstairs photo taken in library with view to the corredor. Library has an acces to balcony. By the stairs the wooden vertical element is repeating again.
Behind and in front is void of the duble hight spaces. Light is coming from the round skylight. We can also see vertical shading in front of window outside.
Dog posing in the corridor is matching with all the colors of architecture, white wals, brown wood on floor and details. Right corner we can see skylight above.
Behind wooden vertical there is a library or another office. It has own balcony turned to the north side. On other side are accesses to three bedrooms.
Even thought this space is open still stays private and calm. Wood gives a warm and relaxing feeling to the room, suitable for office, library or playing space.
On left side first room is only a closet of suite and than the bedroom.On the right bedroom is smaller but still with the balcony, bathroom and closet.
To enter the suite we go through the wardrobe room. On left is bathroom turned to south, sharing the suite balcony. We enter bathroom through closet with wood.
Bathroom dominated of white color and simple mirror. Shining white little tiles are the most unique and special thing here, fitting in the elegant suite.
Use of the wood on floor countinues even in the bathroom. Same wood are door and drawer so it is all related together. All left side is a window of a balcony.
Looking to a night table next to the bed. Colors are very minimal, only wood, grey, white curtains and a metal hanging light. Light is not directly but bright.
Corner of the room is meant for a little table, book shelves and closet. Next to it is a balcony with amazing view, but light curtains are keeping privacy.
Minimal colors only wood, grey, white curtains and a metal hanging light just like in other bedrooms of the Saramagal house. In front the door to the balcony.
Peacful bringht light in the space and calm colors of furniture. Repeating of wood floor, light grey furniture, white walls and curtains keeping the privacy.
Natural light is coming from above shower. Bathroom in same style as others, wood floor and white walls. The small shing tiles are only a detail in nishe.
Lady with the dog passing house. We can see the house in the evening light getting a bit darker. With light inside the windows will now appear visible.
Windows hidden in daylight are visible now that is getting dark with lights inside. There is a new contrast but white volums are now not so strong as before.
View from west side frontaly looking to facade and volumetry of house. White volums on that side are mostly closed, different distances from the street.
Horizontal slabs from volums that are more degradeted. We see terraces of all three floors and a pool in center. Transperant vertical elements are repeating.
Photo of a down terrace by the pool. Space is open all around, just a transparent fence. This terrace is perfect to enjoy evenings or barbecues by the pool.
Reflection of a water in the pool. There is a path other side of pool but it is not visible. Neighbours are away, site of house is very spacious all around.
In night the lights and window are shining but the volums are becoming more unnoticable now. Even with lights on we can not see inside throught the curtains.
Down is the garage entrance with brick wall around and a little patio on the left. Up are black and white horizontal volumes with windows shining in night.
Strong horizontal lines in volumetry with many nishes and shining windows in night. Interesting element in house is a skylight hole on up terrace outside.
Garage in the basement is huge. Here could fit four cars and a lot of space is still left for storage. Materials are concrete floor and ceiling and white walls.
We can observe transparent elements of verticals. Saramagal house is really full of contrast: vertical and horizontal, light and dark, full and empty.
