A single volume, rectangular, wide and imposing, but delicately integrated into the Alentejo townhouse. It was these characteristics that inspired us and served as the motto for this project. A large, apparently compact volume embraces the various private and social spaces of the house. Through several subtractions, we defined a set of outdoor spaces that allow the interior experience to be extended to the outside. Despite being outdoor areas, a feeling of protection and welcome is present, as they are delimited by the walls that define the exterior perimeter of the house.
Abela house
work in progress
The way the old existing house is positioned on the land, on the crest of one of the hills on your land, fascinates us since we visited the place. We always felt that the new house should extend along the ridge of the land. The challenge was defining the main concept of the new house and dealing with the various restrictions set by the current legislation. As soon as we assumed that we would have to maintain or rebuild the existing house, we began to investigate the morphology of the traditional Alentejo house and we found the volume of some rural typologies very inspiring.
