Pires house

Construction phase

Designing a modern house on a traditional street was a significant challenge for us. We envisioned a house created from a cubic volume with a gable roof, integrating it with the surroundings and the unique land features. Our goal was to establish direct connections with the different levels of the land, deviating from conventional typologies. In contrast to the numerous yellow houses in the area, we selected a neutral colour palette, with white and grey as the primary tones.

The entire exterior volume will present as a single white piece with grey details. Natural stone will be incorporated in selected areas, such as the main entrance, patio, and the exterior wall of the social area, to create visual interest. The roof terrace will also feature stone cladding, adding a contrasting element to the predominantly white exterior. Though gabled, the roof won’t look like a typical gable due to the slight rise of the exterior walls, which conceal the eaves. We envision this house as a space of discovery and dynamism within, in contrast to its seemingly solid exterior. The interior will be a mystery to passersby on Rua da Liberdade.
