Metamorphosis House
Starting a project with a blank sheet of paper is always a struggle because of the infinite possibilities. However, in this case, the task was also very demanding. The main house had a vernacular style, and there was a side annexe with deficient architectural quality, both of which were built illegally. In terms of architectural language, we tried to find a compromise between a more vernacular/traditional South Portuguese Architectural grammar and some Islamic elements. The arcs, niches, materials, muxarabis, scale of different volumes, terrace, and the way we explored the frontier between exterior and interior were all themes that we found suitable for this house and the desired living qualities. In the end, we believe that starting from existing conditions, a small oasis can be reborn, respecting the existing conditions but pushing the design further to create this ocean-view retreat for this family.
