Recognising the unique topography—a slope of approximately 7 meters on a hill with stunning views of the Alentejo montado and the Atlantic Ocean—shaped our design approach. We aimed to incorporate recognisable features from the region’s architectural legacy while ensuring a contemporary adaptation to modern living needs. The house emerges as a sculptural and minimalist form, designed to minimise excessive sunlight and harmoniously fit the terrain, with floors aligned to existing terraces. Expansive glazing on the western side captures the view and sunlight while creating an inviting interior. Two front courtyards enhance privacy and allow light to filter through, with one courtyard extending to the basement to bring in natural light. The layout revolves around a central axis that establishes symmetrical relationships with the interior and exterior, creating a unified structure. Key features include a spacious outdoor terrace overlooking the landscape and private areas offering shade from the intense sunlight. A curved suspended terrace at the rear contrasts with the rectilinear walls of the second floor, while an enclosing patio blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. For materials, we utilised local resources like rustic tiles, Estremoz marble, and wood, with a sand-toned exterior that blends with the natural clay soil. This project prioritises a deep connection with the site, ensuring the building is rooted in its unique context.
Carrascal house
Construction phase
The context of this project is Santiago do Cacém, a historic coastal city in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The land’s development, Carrascal, reflects a modern approach that prioritises scattered subdivisions, lacking continuity with the existing urban fabric. This vision yields architectural objects with minimal connection to the local vernacular traditions, which are essential to the place’s identity.
