We aimed to preserve the original building by removing the low-quality expansion that was added to it. We also wanted to ensure that any new expansion would be distinct from the old building, with a contemporary character while also contrasting with the original structure. This dialogue between two buildings, almost a century apart, needed to be achieved through a contrast in volume and layout.
Azinhaga das Carmelitas house
We were captivated by the challenge of transforming and adapting a house located in a historically rich urban area, to make it aesthetically pleasing, functional, comfortable, and energy-efficient for a young, lively family. Our strategy began with clarifying the exterior architectural design of the existing 1930s building.
